Authentic German model bayonet Seitengewehr 98/05 n.A. (new type / 2nd type) produced during World War I. This iconic model of the Imperial German army is recognizable by its broad, heavy blade, nicknamed "butcher blade
The manufacturer Ferdinand Schleutermann & Companie of Remscheid-Hasten, near Solingen (a major center of German cutlery and armaments), used the trademark STAHLBLUME ("steel flower") accompanied by the logo of the winged angel blowing a trumpet, visible on the ricasso.
(The back of the blade bears the imperial marking crown / W / 16, indicating acceptance in 1916 under the reign of Emperor Wilhelm II.)
This example is a rare saw-backed version, initially intended for engineer troops (pioneers), machine gunners, and some non-commissioned officers for cutting and clearing tasks.
Saw-backed versions were highly controversial during the conflict (accused by Allied propaganda of causing particularly severe injuries). Many were ground down during or after the war to remove the teeth; those that retain their original teeth are intact.

Manufactured in 1916 by Ferdinand Schleutermann in Remscheid-Hasten, this bayonet is one of the less common sawtooth S98/05 productions. The Stahlblume mark with the angel corresponds to a period of cooperation or specific marking by the company (sometimes linked to Schulte & Co). Schleutermann/Stahlblume examples from 1916 are sought after for their complete markings and authenticity.
