A rare and iconic piece, this 1866 model sword-bayonet known as "Chassepot" was intended for marine rifles at the end of the Second Empire.
Long, elegant and functional, it is notably used by French naval troops embarked on ships.

Model: Chassepot saber-bayonet model 1866.

Intended for use in the French Navy.

Curved yataghan-type blade.

Blade length: 57 cm.

Total length: 71 cm.

Handle: Brass, grooved, with spring-loaded push button. (Functional).

Markings: stamped with the marine anchor, St-Etienne April 1872 and multiple hallmarks.

Scabbard: in bronzed iron with the same number.

Single registration number.

Adopted in 1866 with the Chassepot Model 1866 rifle, this sword bayonet was primarily intended for marine infantry and colonial troops. It symbolizes a pivotal period between the late Napoleonic Wars and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
