Authentic French bayonet-sabre model 1866 known as "Chassepot", from the Manufacture Impériale de Mutzig, dated July 1868. Manufactured during the Second Empire (Napoleon III), in the famous Mutzig factory, this sabre-bayonet was mounted on the Chassepot rifle, the basic weapon of the French infantry troops in the 1860s-1870s.
The Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) marked the peak and then the decline of this type of weapon, but period examples, with their clear markings, remain highly sought after by collectors.
