Authentic French Model 1866 sabre-bayonet, known as "Chassepot," from the Imperial Manufactory of Mutzig, dated July 1868. An emblematic piece of French weaponry from the Second Empire, having survived the Franco-Prussian War, it impresses with its curved yataghan-type blade, its marked brass hilt, and its well-preserved period markings.

Manufactured during the Second Empire (Napoleon III) in the famous Mutzig factory, this sabre-bayonet was mounted on the Chassepot rifle, the standard weapon of French infantry troops in the 1860s-1870s.
The Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) marked the zenith and then the decline of this type of weapon, but period examples with their clear markings remain highly sought after by collectors.
