French standard bayonet model 1866, known as "Chassepot", intended for the breech-loading infantry rifle of the same name.
This bayonet was designed under the Second Empire, notably to equip troops during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
With its long yatagan blade and brass mount, it is one of the most emblematic bayonets of 19th century French weaponry.
Model: Bayonet model 1866 known as Chassepot.
Total length: 69 cm.
Blade: Yatagan type curve.
Blade length: 57 cm.
Marking: Manufacture d’Armes de St Etienne May 1874 and multiple hallmarks.
Handle: Brass, grooved, with spring-loaded push button. (Functional).
Guard: Steel, with fixing hook
Scabbard: steel, repainted.
Adopted in 1866, this bayonet was designed to accompany the Chassepot rifle model 1866, the first needle-fire weapon of the French army. It was used notably during the 1870-1871 campaign, but continued to serve in the following years, sometimes modified for the Gras rifles (model 1874).
A piece representative of the transition to modern weapons.
Looks great in a display case, compatible with period rifles.
