This pistol is an authentic piece from the regulation model 1777 1st type of the Manufacture de St Étienne and converted to percussion , designed for the French cavalry on the eve of the Revolution.
It was later modified to percussion, as was frequently the case in the 19th century in order to prolong the use of these flintlock weapons in arsenals or for civilian purposes.
This model was initially assigned to dragoon and cuirassier regiments, and is distinguished by its robust lines, brass fittings and short, large-caliber barrel.
The flintlock system was replaced by a percussion mechanism, probably during the July Monarchy or the Second Empire.
Round, smoothbore barrel with flats at the breech and dated "80" for 1780, then stamped with a fleur-de-lis under a crown and a cursive "B" for "Joseph BERTHEAS", controller of cannons from 1777 to 1785. The marking on the breech tang is missing. Flintlock mechanism marked "St Étienne", stamped with an "L" under a large crown for Étienne LAMBERT, controller from 1777 to 1784.
Model: 1777 1st type (converted to percussion).
Length: 34 cm.
Canon: 19 cm.
Caliber: . 69 (approx. 17.5 mm).
Turntable converted to percussion.
Cast brass fittings, stamped "J" under a crown.
Walnut stock.
Original steel rod with nail head present.
Functional mechanism, with two very clear and play-free cocking notches.
Compatible with our .69 caliber lead bullets, available for sale in the 'Militaria' section under "Lead Bullet".
The weapon no longer has its belt hook, usually fixed to the side plate, but remains complete and well preserved for a modified example.
All metal parts with a stained grey patina and varnished.
A fine transitional piece, a testament to the adaptations made to flintlock weapons in the face of the arrival of percussion systems.
A relevant addition to any collection covering the revolutionary and imperial era, or the weaponry of the July Monarchy.
(Wear and patina from age, belt hook missing, handling marks on the stock. As is).
The photographs are an integral part of the description and are binding on the buyer.
The purchase constitutes acceptance of the condition of the item as presented.
