Gras bayonet model 1874 – Steyr factory 1879 (Austrian manufacture)
The Gras model 1874 bayonet became standard issue after the adoption of the Gras rifle, the first French weapon with a metal cartridge, in service from 1874 to 1886.Faced with insufficient national production capacity, Austria (Steyr factory) was asked to produce part of the bayonets – around 200,000 produced.
Austrian manufacture for France under the Third Republic, it is distinguished by:
A straight T-shaped blade of approximately 52 cm, a brass handle with walnut plates, held by two rivets.
• Total length: 65 cm
• Blade length: 52 cm
• Straight blade with double groove
• Bronzed iron scabbard.
• Markings: STEYR factory 1879
• Very good condition: shiny blade; push button perfectly functional.
We can see a re-striking of the registration number on the quillon and the scabbard, probably carried out during ironing in the factory. (Monomatricule).
This detail adds to the authenticity of the piece and testifies to his long military career.
It combines authenticity, a rare state of preservation, complete markings, and a clear history. Ideal for collectors, museums, historical reenactors, or military bladed weapons enthusiasts.
