This authentic 1874 model sword bayonet is the regulation accessory for the famous Gras 1874 rifle.
Adopted under the Third Republic, it is distinguished by:
A straight T-shaped blade of approximately 52 cm, a brass handle with walnut scales, held together by two rivets.
• Total length: 65 cm
• Blade length: 52 cm
• Straight blade with double groove
• Bronzed iron scabbard.
• Markings: St-Etienne Arms Factory July 1876.
• Very good condition: shiny blade; fully functional push button.
The 1874 model bayonet was designed to complement the Gras rifle, the first metallic cartridge weapon of the French army (in service from 1874 to 1886).
Quickly replaced by the Lebel M1886 rifle, the bayonet continued to equip, in particular, the marine infantry and the colonial army, often identifiable by the anchor symbols engraved on the crossguard or scabbard.
Symbol of the post-Chassepot period and transition to modern weapons.
