Adopted under the July Monarchy to replace the famous briquet saber of the Empire, the Model 1831 gladius accompanied French foot troops for much of the 19th century. It notably equipped the infantry, the National Guard, and the Foreign Legion, and participated in the campaigns in Algeria, Crimea, Italy, and the Second Empire.

Nicknamed "coupe-choux" (cabbage cutter) by soldiers, this gladius is distinguished by its robust brass hilt with a fluted grip and its straight, double-edged blade ending in a fish-tail point. More than just a weapon, it also served as a campaign tool for various bivouac tasks.
