Adopted in 1831 under the July Monarchy, the 1831 model gladius is an emblematic weapon of the French infantry. Inspired by Roman gladii, it was produced until the 1870s.
Pihet Frères, one of the most important manufacturers of bladed weapons in Paris, supplied a large proportion of the troop and officer gladii of that era.
Examples dated 1838 are relatively sought after because they correspond to the first major production period of the model.
